Poker Variations

Poker comes in four main varieties: straight, stud, draw, and community. While each variation of poker has its distinct variations, the basic process of the game remains the same. Despite their differences, straight, stud, draw, and community games are all still forms of poker.

Straight poker games are the simplest forms of poker. All the cards are typically dealt out in a single round, without a possibility of changing any of the cards. The betting also takes place in a single round, but players have the opportunity to raise each other’s bets.

The second main family of poker games are stud poker games. In this type of poker cards are dealt in a pattern of face up and face down cards on the table. Typically a round of betting follows each different round of dealing. Seven Card Stud is the most popular type of stud game. Players are dealt two additional cards in Seven Card Stud, so they end up with seven cards to choose from in order to make a five card hand.

Draw games of poker allow the player to discard cards that they do not want and draw new cards. The most popular draw variation is Five Card Draw.

Community poker games are becoming increasingly popular with the rising popularity of Texas Hold’em. In community poker games each player is dealt individual cards, but then given the opportunity to use communal cards to make a better hand. Communal cards are dealt face up in the center of the table so that all players may use them to build their respective hands.
